Because modern senior citizens are living longer and staying more active than at any other time in human history, it is becoming increasingly important to many of them to remain living independently in their own homes for as long as possible. Fortunately, there are alternatives available to taking up residence in retirement communities. Here are some ideas for those seeking options for healthy and happy retirement living:

More Seniors are Choosing to Remain in Their Own Homes

Some seniors seem to automatically put their long-term homes on the market the day after they punch the time clock for the last time. However, those who do so frequently end up feeling lost and depressed in their new surroundings, particularly if they’ve made a major move to a retirement community in another state. Staying put will keep seniors close to family, friends and the community that they’re familiar with.

Home Care Agencies Make a Big Difference

Many seniors aren’t quite up to performing the necessary household chores to enable them to live comfortably in their own homes. However, this doesn’t automatically mean that they should enter assisted living facilities. The best solution for this is often to find a caring senior service that will provide the kind of help that makes it possible for them to remain living in their own homes. For instance, home care companies provide services such as housework, laundry, errands and meal preparation. They may also assist client with personal care such as help bathing and getting dressed.

The Lure of the Open Road

Many active seniors hit the open road in an RV almost immediately after leaving the rat race. Although some of them sell their homes to fund their travels, others prefer to keep their houses and only travel during part of the year. Either way, it’s a great way for seniors to catch up on the traveling that they weren’t able to do during the years when they were bringing home the bacon for the family table.

Volunteer Abroad

Seniors often choose to donate their abundant knowledge and experience to organizations in developing countries where their services are badly needed. Volunteer opportunities exist all over the globe for those interested in exploring the planet while helping other people and communities in need.
Whatever individual roads seniors choose to take after they close their office doors or put down their hard hats for the last time, a healthy retirement account can have a significant impact on the overall quality of their golden years.
