The flu is one of the many unpleasant things that come along with the colder weather. The immune system has a tendency to weaken as you age, which is why older people are more likely to develop the flu. The good news is that there are several things that you can do to fight the flu. Below are five weapons that will help you fight the flu:

Sleep

Getting the proper amount of rest plays a critical role in fighting the flu. When you rest, you allow your body to naturally heal itself. You also help your immune system fight foreign invaders. On the other hand, being sleep-deprived will make it harder for your immune system to work.

Handwashing

Washing your hands is one of the most effective things that you can do to prevent the flu. It is estimated that eight out of 10 infections are spread through coughing, sneezing or touching surfaces. You will need to wash your hands after you cough, sneeze or shake anyone else’s hands. It is also a good idea to wash your hands before you eat or touch your face. In order for hand washing to be effective, you will need to wash them for a minimum of 20 seconds in warm water with soap.

Exercise

Many of us are less active during the winter months because of the cold weather, but you should still try to get 30 minutes of activity in per day. Exercise helps fight the flu by increasing the activity of the white blood cells.

Zinc

A healthy diet will help build up your immune system. You should make sure that you get plenty of zinc in your diet. Zinc helps fight the flu by preventing the virus from entering your cells. Wheat germs and oysters are some of the foods that are very high in zinc.

Massage

A massage will not only help you de-stress and relax, but it can also help you fight the flu. A massage helps boost your immune system, preventing a possible trip to an urgent care facility like urgent care in South Gate, CA.

Just because this time of the year is known as the flu season, it does not mean that you have to get the flu. You can fight the flu with rest, exercise, zinc and massages. You also want to make sure that you wash your hands on a regular basis.
