It’s probably fair to say that most parts of the world offer sailing opportunities in some way or another, but have you ever wondered where the best sailing destinations for retirees might be? I thought you might have, that’s why I’ve conducted copious amounts of research and tried to think of the areas that would prove to be best for people of retirement age in this article.
The suggestions below would involve sailing opportunities in some of the most beautiful waters on our planet, however, I wanted to make sure you could return to the port after your enjoyable day’s sailing and have everything else you could need for a comfortable lifestyle.
This gorgeous country stretches along much of the Dalmatian Coast and must rank as a personal favorite of mine. The seas along the Croatian Coast are stunningly beautiful: think quaint little fishing villages and a relaxed and tranquil way-of-life; plus there is an archipelago of many thousands of islands to explore in this part of the world, so there would never be any chance of you getting bored if you decided to move and retire in the area. The town of Split and surrounding area is an especially good choice and should make for the most comfortable retirement option in Croatia.
2. The Bahamas
I think the islands which make up the nation of The Bahamas are just about as close as you can get to paradise on Earth! The seas are perfectly azure-blue here and this is your chance to take a boat out into calm and tranquil seas and enjoy a swim around your boat in the temptingly-warm waters. Be fascinated by the abundant and colorful marine life and once you get back to terre firma, it might interest you to know that much of The Bahamas is on a par with Florida in the United States. All of the comforts of Western life are available for you to enjoy in this archipelago. Also, there are marinas and ports scattered across the whole country, so it should never prove to be a problem for avid sailors looking to dock their boat.
3. The Greek Islands
If you asked me to pinpoint a specific Greek island for great sailing opportunities, do you know what? I don’t think I could do it. There are hundreds of islands in Greece, many of which really do make for perfect sailing destinations. The Mediterranean and Aegean Seas around the Greek islands are usually very calm and restful and this means even people who may be inclined to feel a little queasy when sailing should be absolutely fine here. If you were looking for some popular suggestions, however, some of the islands which come highly recommended include Rhodes, Crete, Zakynthos, Skiathos, Kefalonia and Corfu.
4. The Whitsunday Islands
74 stunning islands, all surrounded by the unbeatable beauty of the Great Barrier Reef make up the Whitsunday Islands, which can be found off the north-east coast of Australia. Now, if you like the seas around your boat to be chock-a-block full of fascinating sea life, oh my goodness are you going to love retirement in the Whitsundays! There is even an island here called Day Dream Island—that’s true; and the beaches in this part of Australia have frequently been designated as being the very best in the whole world. Being in Australia you can guarantee all of the best comforts in life for your retirement, however, life in this country does not come cheap!
5. The Maldives
The nation of The Maldives is made up of many thousands of tiny islands and atolls and can be found in the Indian Ocean. The archipelago is literally surrounded by coral reefs and this makes for some of the most interesting sailing opportunities on the planet. If you feel like it, you might even like to enjoy scuba diving off your boat: a chance to catch sight of some of the most awesomely-colorful marine life you are ever likely to see in any of the seas and oceans of our planet. Once you get back to your dock, you can look forward to some extremely luxurious living standards; however, be prepared to pay for this!
